Faculty Families are an important part of life at Summer in Switzerland. For many years, they have been a cherished tradition, helping students feel at home while also giving them opportunities to explore, connect, and grow.

Every student is placed into a Faculty Family, led by faculty “parents” and joined by peers from different grade levels and classrooms. These families provide students with a network of support that goes beyond academics. While other summer programs may offer advisors who focus primarily on academics, LAS Faculty Families nurture the whole student: their social, emotional, and academic well-being.

Building Connections Beyond the Classroom
Faculty Families meet regularly, with gatherings ranging from dinners to adventurous outings. These moments give students a chance to build friendships across the SIS community. For every student, these gatherings are invaluable for making connections outside their dorm rooms, classes, and activities.

Family Day Adventures
One of the highlights of the summer program is Family Day, when Faculty Families set off for a full day of exploration and fun. Each family plans its own adventure, creating memories that students carry with them long after the summer ends.

Last year, one Faculty Family traveled to Lausanne for a mix of culture, history, and play. Students began their day at the Cantonal Library and Museum, diving into exhibits on geology, paleontology, and zoology. They then visited Lausanne’s 750-year-old cathedral, climbing the belfry to take in sweeping views of the city. After exploring the historic heart of Lausanne, the group enjoyed a few rounds of laser tag at LaseRed, before ending their day with a lakeside dinner in Ouchy. The balance of learning, adventure, and laughter perfectly captured the LAS spirit.

Another Faculty Family decided to stay closer to home, celebrating the beauty of Leysin. They hiked up to Prafandaz, where a BBQ (complete with grilled meats and vegetables!) was paired with games of pétanque, football, and cards against the backdrop of Lac Léman in the distance. From there, the day flowed into mini golf at Feydey, ice skating at the village rink, and a hearty dinner at La Fromagerie, where some students tried Swiss fondue for the first time. Back on campus, the family closed the evening with a campfire and s’mores, a cozy and classic ending to a day full of activities!

Why Faculty Families Matter
Faculty Families aren’t just about activities, they’re about belonging. They give students the chance to form meaningful relationships with staff and peers, creating a sense of home and community far from home. They encourage students to try new things, whether it’s climbing a cathedral tower, tasting fondue, or learning to ice skate. Most importantly, they provide a support system that helps students navigate both the fun and challenges of life at SIS.

At SIS, Faculty Families are more than a tradition, they’re the heart of our community. And in the summer program, they help create unforgettable summers.
